One Step Away is Philadelphia's first and only newspaper produced by people experiencing homelessness. The monthly tabloid includes news about homelessness and affordable housing as well as creative writing, photographs, illustrations and other content produced by those experiencing homelessness or joblessness.
We felt that One Step Away could benefit greatly from transitioning the newspaper to a magazine. While a little more expensive to produce, we thought that One Step Away could charge more per copy therefore increasing donations. Also, since a magazine is printed on a different type of paper, the vendors would no longer have to worry about the ink bleeding on their hands.
We also produced an updated remittance envelope for donations and QR code cards for donors who would prefer to view the magazine online.
Rebranding Initiative
The Gun Crisis Reporting Project is an award-winning, independent, nonprofit journalism community striving to illuminate the epidemic of homicide by gunfire in Philadelphia.
We were brought on to design a brochure, remittance, and business cards. While most of the imagery is dark, we used bright pops of yellow throughout the piece to signify police tape. We also used evidence markers as a way to display statistics about gun violence.
This year 11th Street expanded its dental facilities in response to the expanding needs of the community. The facility received 6,805 dental visits last year, and the waiting list for care for a non-emergency appointment is four weeks. In the North Philadelphia neighborhood where 11th Street operates, more than 45 percent of adults have not had a dental visit in the past year, and 27 percent of children of children have received no preventative dental care.
They needed a packet designed to show funders and potential donors how they could help.
The original request was for a folder with step-down inserts, but we thought a booklet would be much easier to read.

When asked what One Step Away had on its wish list, the Director responded, "a SEPTA campaign." She wanted to grab the attention of not only commuters coming into the city on business, but potential vendors as well.
We wanted to get across that One Step Away is not panhandling, and that it is a job. We came up with the slogan "I work in the city and have a corner office." and included an asterisk explaining what the program is and does.
That slogan transformed into a series that included:
"I work in the city. Stop by my office."
"I work in the city. My office has great view." and
"Last week i was told to get a job. This week, I have one."
We decided to keep the background black and white and out of focus to really let the vendors stand out.
Enjoy Life Personal Concierge Services (ELPS) works closely with their clients to determine their needs — medical, social, spiritual, emotional — and craft a plan to satisfy them.
We were brought on to design all of their brand collateral including: business cards, letterhead, envelopes and direct mail campaigns.
